So far I have 2 prototype laptops, whith one running windows (yuk).

The initial perl code is able to run a slideshow in fullscreen, with dithering for 16 bit video mode.

Test with a Toshiba Protege 3480CT Laptop:

  • PIII 600Mhz
  • 64MB RAM
  • 11GB HD
  • screen is 1024x768x16 (video card can do 24 bits, but not the LCD)
  • opening a 300kB 1024x768 jpg takes less than 1s
  • scaling takes 2-3s (when displaying in 512x384)
  • dithering to 15 bits takes about 8s (oddly enough it takes longer to dither a smaller window:9-10s)
  • average of 12s processing per picture ... slow but acceptable for a picture frame
